Danny Campbell, a disabled veteran and hobby sculptor originally from Cadillac, donated six 1/8 scale statues of Michigan Military Dogs with personalized identification cards for Wexford County. Initially, these sculptures were made with the theme of how dogs were used in various military operations, so each piece was made with a dog companion.
This series was donated in honor of Dawn Yoshiko Coon (maiden name Gottschall) and her brother Joshua Aaron Gottschall (who has passed away in 2023), both of whom served in Company C, 1/75 Rangers from 1992 to 1996.
Mr. Campbell has donated numerous pieces to The National WWII Museum, The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, The DuSable in Chicago, The Great Lakes National Museum in Toledo, and other regional institutions across the United States of America.
The statues have been titled:
- Wexford County Paratroopers (Airborne Infantry in World War II 1939-1945)
- Wexford County Marines (Use of Chris-Craft boats in World War II 1939-1945)
- Wexford and Vietnam (Vietnam War c. 1955-1975)
- Nurse’s Aide (Use of Casualty Dog in World War II 1939-1945)
- The Third Michigan (Iraq War 2003-2011)
- Walls of Honor (Wexford County Veterans Wall of Honor in the Wexford County Courthouse and Michigan War Dog Memorial in South Lyon)
